A letter from the editor
I’m not sure there’s anything more satisfying than coming out of a cold, snowy winter and finally seeing flower buds peeking through the earth. No matter how dark, cold and frozen everything seemed, those resilient little buds make their way to the surface every spring. It’s like Earth hits a reset button and everything comes back greener and brighter than before.
What a wonderful sign of new beginnings and new possibilities.
When springtime comes around, I’m always reminded of how important it is to take care of the environment and support the community that I live in; it’s a great time to give back to the community. When the weather starts to warm up, I love to volunteer to help clean up a local park or work with one of the nonprofit organizations I support. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and happiness that I can’t get anywhere else. Something about working to make the world a little more beautiful just makes me feel good.
And I know other people feel this way, too – so many MSU students go out of their way to volunteer throughout the entire year. This month, ing Magazine features Spartans who make an effort to make their community – and the world – a little better and a little more beautiful. Check out our cover story featuring MSU’s Greek Life. Don’t be too quick to write them off – Greeks are doing great things for the communities that they’re in. From raising money for their individual philanthropies to clocking in thousands of hours community service with local organizations, Greeks make a huge effort to give back as often as they can.
MSU Greeks aren’t the only Spartans doing great things – April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and many students are doing their part to stop campus sexual assault through the It’s On Us campaign. Make sure to read up on the campaign and see what you can do to help survivors and prevent future assaults.
No matter how you choose to participate, giving back to the community is incredibly important. So do what you can to make East Lansing a little more beautiful this spring. With a little bit of effort, Spartans WILL make the world a whole lot better.
