A celebration for the dork in all of us
“Nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff. Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-your-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. When people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff,’ which is not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness,’” once said author John Green, and he couldn’t have put it better. Nerds, geeks and superfans alike rejoice in their respective fandoms daily, but this month brings an extra special day to celebrate. July 13 is National Embrace Your Geekness Day, and Spartans everywhere are celebrating with pride. Whether you’re geeked about a television or book series, a hobby you’re passionate about, a certain subject or anything in between, share your love this summer and let the world know how cool we geeks truly are.
Spartan grad student and self-proclaimed Gryffindor Megan Yasick isn’t shy about her love for J.K. Rowling’s critically acclaimed series. “Harry Potter is just a genuinely well written and well integrated story. Regardless of what it means to me, it’s just an amazing and engaging story,” said Yasick, whose apartment is adorned with Harry Potter merchandise. “I think it speaks to me especially because my family has experienced challenging times in the wake of death and Harry Potter has always been something I can lean on.” She also adds, “When I’m having a hard time, I can just fall back into the series and go somewhere else for a bit that’s both beautiful and relatable to me. It’s like a comfort thing. There’s all these characters that I know and love and they have so many positive lessons to share. They have so much heart and compassion and bravery, but they’re real and they experience heartbreak and hardship too. It’s easy to become really invested.”
Jake Beachum notes that a geeky love for something is a year-round festivity. However jolly it may be, this recent MSU grad plans to celebrate Embrace Your Geekness Day by watching his favorite classic “Home Alone.” Though it may seem a little warm for Christmas movies, Beachum explains that his love for the holiday film isn’t seasonal. “It’s just something I can watch any day and it puts me in a good mood. I can quote the entire movie, so I’ll literally make references to it in casual conversation and not even realize it.” This July, Beachum will be settling in with his favorite movie and a highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner.
There’s a geek inside all of us ready to be let out. You might be a Jedi or a Sith, Alliance or Horde, Hufflepuff or Slytherin, but whatever you love, embrace it. Celebrate your geekness not just July 13, but every day.
