Most people I know are sick of Michigan winter by the time February rolls around—the cold days, colder nights, sunless sky and snow-coated everything. This month is even worse for those that want to celebrate Valentine’s Day but don’t have a significant other.
While many of us can agree that Valentines Day is just a “hallmark holiday” with no real significance, it can be hard to watch your co-worker receive a dozen roses three separate times before the day is over. If you’re single and feel like you’re missing out on the month of love, don’t fret: just celebrate Galentine’s Day!
I’m glad you asked.
Galentine’s Day is a non-official holiday that occurs every February 13. If you couldn’t tell by the name, it’s a day for ladies to celebrate ladies. The holiday originated on the hit show Parks and Recreation, but has since transcended into the real world (and onto my calendar).
In pure Leslie Knope fashion, women get together to celebrate each other and their friendships—proving that love and appreciation doesn’t have to always be romantic and in the form of flowers, candy or valentines.
You may be thinking, this is just a holiday for sad women who wish they had a valentine…and you would be WRONG. If Leslie Knope taught us anything, it’s that women rule and deserve a day to recognize their awesomeness with a bunch of other awesome ladies—not in spite of V-Day, but in addition to it.
Regardless if you have plans with your valentine (or, let’s be real, some rom-coms and your couch), take an extra day this month to hang out with and appreciate the women you call your friends. If you have an X and a Y chromosome and feel kinda left out, you can celebrate Galentine’s Day too! There are tons of ways to celebrate the women in your life, whether they are friends or family.
No matter how you choose to spend your Galentine’s Day, get your girls together and:
